While D.L. Griffith was pastor of the First Baptist Church, Alvin, he was invited by some Baptist families in Texas City to come and organize a church. He ventured across the prairies of Galveston County in a horse drawn buggy and led in the organization of the First Baptist Church, Texas City, on March 16, 1905. Soon after the organization the church called W.C. Ponder, who was living in Alvin, to be their first pastor. There were five charter members in this organization: Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Palmer, Mrs. M.S. Terry, Mrs. Lillian Wood and Mrs. Sarah Corbin.
Their first building was a small one room building. The work grew under Brother Ponder's leadership. He was followed by M.S. Kerby, who served several years. Others who have served as pastor during the first twenty-five years are as follows: W.C. Brown, Isaiah Watson, C.H. Webb, E.A. Petroff, H.G. Finley, W.H. Muston, Dale S. Crowley, Otis Cahill and Floyd Marshall.
In 1914, Texas City was small and its streets were graded without hard surfacing. High winds created dust storms that stopped horse and buggy traffic and filled the church building with dust and dirt. Houses were widely scattered, a few on each block, and Sixth Street became a sea of mud whenever it rained."
...but the church was growing and the original building could no longer take care of the congregation..." Under the leadership of W.C. Brown, a large tabernacle 50' x 73', was built on one side of a new building site. The hurricane of 1915 brought a great deal of devastation and changed the outlook of the town so that the church in its future struggles improved the building and it became the church home for 22 years.
During the next few years Texas City and the church experienced a booming growth. In March of 1950, 16 acres were purchased at 1400 9th Avenue North (present location of the church). In December of that year the location of the First Baptist Church moved from the corner of 7th Avenue and 3rd Street to the present location. In November 1967, the church voted to construct the building in which we now meet.
